First African American Command Chief Master Sergeant 189th Airlift Wing

Command Chief Master Sergeant (CMSgt) Ronald Boston:

CMSgt Boston was born in Crossett, Arkansas. He attended Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe in 1982, and later received a Bachelor’s Degree in Social and Criminal Justice in April 2014.

In 1988, he began his military career with the 189th Airlift Wing, Arkansas Air National Guard at Little Rock Air Force Base as a member of the Security Forces Squadron. He completed his Basic Training and Student Security Police Training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

As a 189th Security Forces Leader, CCM Boston accepted a number of active-duty challenges to include numerous tours at Little Rock Air Force Base with the 314th and 19th Security Forces Squadron and abroad. In 1997, he served as a Security Force Member with the 39th SFS, Incirlik Air Force Base, Turkey. In 2003, he served as Team Leader, 732nd SFS, Baghdad International Airport, Iraq. In March 2005, he served as Flight Chief, 48th SFS, RAF Lakenheath, England. Also, CMSgt Boston served as Flight Chief of the 376th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron while deployed to Manas Air Force Base, Kyrgyzstan in 2009.

In addition to his overseas deployments, CMSgt Boston deployed in support of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Louisiana in 2005, Operation Jump Start (Border Patrol) in Tucson, Arizona in 2006 and Operation Jump Start (Border Patrol) in Lordsburg, New Mexico in 2008. CMSgt Boston served as Operations Superintendent for the 189th SFS and Mission Support Group Superintendent for the 189th Mission Support Group, 189th Airlift Wing, Arkansas Air National Guard.

On February 1, 2014, CMSgt Boston was promoted to Chief Master Sergeant (E9) and assigned as Command Chief Master Sergeant for the 189th Airlift Wing, Arkansas Air National Guard. He is the first African American assigned as Command Chief Master Sergeant for the 189th Airlift Wing. As the Command Chief Master Sergeant, he works closely with the 189th Airlift Wing Commander, all commanders in the 189th Airlift Wing, as well as all Chief Master Sergeants to prepare the Enlisted force to best execute mission requirements. In 2019, CMSgt Boston was assigned as the Command Chief Master Sergeant for the Arkansas Air National Guard Headquarters, Camp J.T. Robinson.

CMSgt Boston has been awarded and decorated throughout his military career. He is the recipient of the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, the Humanitarian Service Medal, Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Air Force Overseas Ribbon-Short Tour, Air Force Expeditionary Service Ribbon, Air Force Longevity Service, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal. Additionally, CMSgt Boston is the recipient of the 2004, 189th Security Forces Squadron Colonel Jack H. Lykes Memorial Award and in 2010 he was the recipient of the 189th Security Forces Squadron Senior NCO of the Year.

In his civilian capacity, he served as Chief of the Information Protection Office, 19th Airlift Wing, Little Rock Air Force Base, where he was responsible for the development, maintenance, and currency of all security guidance and directives to meet current and long-range program goals and objectives. He also spent 11 years as a full-time member of the Pine Bluff Police Department. CMSgt Boston is currently self-employed and serves as the Chief Executive Officer for the Big Chief Transport Service.

CMSgt Boston retired from the Arkansas Air National Guard in January 2022, with over 33 years of outstanding military service.
